Bada-bing. Our DSL line was just upgraded to 1.5Gb (previously was 384Kb).
- Same business class QoS.
- Nearly 4 times the speed.

Holy Cow! firstmagic.com has moved physically, and logically.
- Now located amongst the redwoods above Santa Cruz...
- Primary server has undergone a major upgrade to a new rack-mount
machine: Dual-Opteron (244's) with 2 GB of PC3200 RAM.
- Currently, the new server has lots of new SATA HD space.
- The MUSH accounts, webspace, mailinglists, and other hosted
services will soon move to a RAID-5 file server, affording redundant,
reliable storage.
- More details soon!

Just finished a major upgrade of the machine. Over 290 days of uptime before
the upgrade.
- Upgraded the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and HD's. Now running an ABit KG-7-RAID with a 1.4ghz AMD Athlon,
512 megs of registered DDR RAM, and a pair of 80gig Seagate Barracuda ST380021A drives. One of the drives
is being used as a 'mirror' of the other, so we have redundant storage.
- During the course of the upgrade, it became evident that the older power supply, a 250 watter, was not going
to satisfy the strict requirements of the new CPU and motherboard. A new 400 watt power supply is now in place.
- Sadly, I finally had to retire the old, triangular shaped Hercules monochrome video card as the new motherboard
doesn't have any ISA slots. Neither do any other motherboards worth buying today. That video card was the
last remaining piece of hardware that was from the original 'magic' I built as a linux machine back in '93 (it
was a 386 dx2-40 with 4megs of RAM). Oh well. : (
- A new 2.4.5 kernel is in place as well.
06-05-01
- I completed the upgrade on the UPS which means that firstmagic.com is now
protected by over 7 hours of battery backup. : ) No rolling-blackouts
here! So, barring any hardware upgrades we may make to the MUSH hosting
machines, there should never be a reason for them to go down.
06-03-01
- Upgraded the UPS. As of today, the main server, hub, and DSL router
should be able to survive a 3.75 to 4 hour power outage. Considering
the infamous 'rolling blackouts' are done in 2 hour chunks, this is
enough battery power to survive through whatever 'rolling blackout' the
ISO wants to throw our way. : )
- I was expecting to have closer to 7 hours of battery backup, but I've
been temporarily thwarted by what appears to be a plug/socket mismatch.
Even though nearly 4 hours of battery time will suffice, I should be
able to get the full 7 hour capacity online in the next day or two.
01-17-01
- Our site was affected by a nearly 2 hour long power outage early in the afternoon due to a 'rolling black out' brought on by a stage 3 power alert in California. Since the UPS can only run the main server, hub, and DSL router for 45 minutes or so, it necessitated some down time.
06-19-00
- Our site was affected by a nearly 6 hour long power outage early in the morning (roughly 12:00am to 5:45am). Since the UPS can only run the main server, hub, and DSL router for 45 minutes or so, it necessitated some down time.
02-06-00
- After over 270 days of straight uptime, we brought the machine down to upgrade the OS to a clean install of Slackware 7.0. A long overdue upgrade, we're finally running on a multi-proc friendly 2.2.x kernel.
01-13-00
- We now are running our own DNS server and are the authoritative DNS
server for firstmagic.com. This allows us to run DNS for our customers or add
'virtual domains'.
04-19-99
- Main server, hub, and DSL router are all on UPS now. Even in the case of a power outage here, the link will still be up and running without interruption. The UPS should be able to handle approximately 40 minutes of useage without power.
04-12-99
- Replaced case, motherboard, CPU, RAM. Added additional 10.1 gig HD
- Currently running on an ASUS-P2BD board, with dual Pentium-II 350's, 256 megs of RAM.
- Upgraded NIC from 10baseT WD to 100baseT 3com
02-14-99
- Installed 4.5 gig Seagate Cheetah SCSI drive
- Installed SCSI IOMEGA Zip Drive
- Open to hosting MUSH/MUX games!
12-01-98
- Upgraded linux kernel from 2.0.32 to 2.0.36
11-23-98
- The web/email server was just upgraded. Previously, it was a Pentium 75 (overclocked to 90mhz) with 48 megs of RAM. Now it's a Pentium 233 MMX (overclocked to run at 266mhz) with 128 megs of RAM.
